Probiotics Reduce Body Weight
The use of lactobacillus gasseri showed a significant decrease in body weight, and BMI (1, 2). The significant reductions in waist circumference and body fat mass reflect a decrease in abdominal fat areas.
Probiotics Only for Women's Weight Loss
A study reported that women who took probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus CGMCC1.3724 lost almost 10 lbs because of a decrease in levels of leptin, the appetite hormone (3). However, this treatment did not work with men.
Probiotics for Weight Loss (for Men and Women) and Body Fat Reduction
Akkermansia muciniphila has been known to promote weight loss for both men and women (4). A. muciniphila is naturally present in a healthy gut and it eats mucin produced by the epithelial cells that line the GI tract. A. muciniphila has shown that it can repair metabolism that has been damaged by obesity. Unfortunately, there are no commercially available supplements that contain A. muciniphila yet. If your gut is already colonized with A. muciniphila, you can support them with prebiotics.
Body fat mass was reduced in all treatments (including Lactobacillus amylovorus and Lactobacillus fermentum) with a big reduction by L. amylovorus consumption. Gut microbiome showed a significant reduction in the abundance of Clostridial cluster IV from L. amylovorus treatment (5).
